Lake Wales Connected Plan - Central Avenue Streetscape
Lake Wales, Florida
ChastainSkillman | DCCM was engaged to design and prepare bid documents for the transformation of Central Avenue in Downtown Lake Wales, aligning with the award-winning Lake Wales Connected Plan. This visionary plan reimagines the corridor to prioritize multimodal transportation and enhance the pedestrian experience.
Key Design Features:
-
Protected Bicycle Track
The conceptual design narrows vehicle travel lanes to accommodate a wide, protected bicycle track. This lane is buffered from vehicular traffic by a combination of landscaping and on-street parking, promoting safe and accessible cycling. -
Trail Connectivity
The new bike lanes integrate with existing and planned tracks along Park Avenue and First Street, contributing to a bicycle-friendly city center. They will also connect to the Lake Wailes Trail via the new Crystal Lake Park trail, forming part of a broader inter-city trail network that will eventually link to a county-wide system. -
Streetscape Enhancements
Additional improvements include:- Wider sidewalks
- On-street parking
- Enhanced pedestrian crossings
- Continuous shade tree canopy
- Pedestrian-oriented signage and lighting
ChastainSkillman | DCCM’s scope of work included conducting a topographic survey of the project area, preparing detailed design and construction documents, and providing construction services and certification to ensure the project was executed in accordance with the approved plans.
